Getting the Most Out of Your Reed Diffuser

Getting the Most Out of Your Reed Diffuser

Reading time: about 4 minutes

Reed diffusers are about as low-maintenance as home fragrance gets — no flame, no timer, just a steady, quiet scent that fills a room on its own. That said, a few small habits make a real difference in how well yours performs, and how long it lasts. Here's how to get the most out of it.

Setting it up

When you first open your diffuser, place the reeds in the bottle and let them sit for about an hour before you flip them for the first time. This gives the reeds time to properly soak up the fragrance oil, so that first flip actually carries scent into the room instead of just rearranging dry reeds.

Use all the reeds that came with your diffuser — more reeds generally means a stronger scent throw, since each one is a small wick drawing fragrance up and releasing it into the air.

Flipping the reeds

Once a week is a good starting rhythm. Simply lift the reeds out and turn them so the saturated end now points up into the air, then set them back in the bottle. The freshly exposed, oil-soaked end releases a noticeably stronger burst of scent for the first day or so after flipping.

If you want more fragrance in the room, flip more often — every few days rather than weekly. If the scent feels strong enough already, every couple of weeks is plenty. There's no fixed rule here; it really just depends on your room and your nose.

Where to put it

A few things to keep in mind when choosing a spot:

  • Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like radiators — both can degrade the fragrance oil and throw the scent off.
  • Avoid drafty spots directly under air vents or in a constant breeze, which can disperse the scent before it has a chance to settle into the room.
  • Set it on a stable, flat surface, ideally on a coaster or tray — reed diffuser oil can mark painted, varnished, or lacquered surfaces if left in contact for a long time.
  • A little height helps. On a shelf, console table, or windowsill, the scent has more room to drift through the space.

How long it should last

Our reed diffusers are designed to scent a room for up to 6 months, depending on the size of the room, the airflow, and how often you flip the reeds. You'll notice the fragrance mellowing gradually over time rather than stopping all at once — that's completely normal and just part of how the oil is used up.

A quick safety note

Reed diffuser oil is alcohol-based and meant to stay in the bottle and in the air, not on skin or surfaces, and it's not meant to be ingested. Keep diffusers out of reach of children and pets, and away from the edge of tables or shelves where they could easily be knocked over.

That's really it

Soak, flip, find it a good spot out of the sun and the draft — reed diffusers aren't meant to be fussed over, and a few minutes of setup is all it takes to get a steady, beautiful scent that quietly does its job for months.
